Chilliwack Chiefs looking for volunteers ahead of home season opener on October 1

CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack Chiefs are looking for volunteers to enhance the game-day experience of Chilliwack fans for the upcoming 2022-23 season.

The Chilliwack Chiefs announced Thursday (Aug. 25) morning on social media that they’re eager to welcome volunteers for a variety of positions ahead of their home season opener against the Merritt Centennials on Saturday, October 1 at the Chilliwack Coliseum.

Positions run the spectrum from ticket taking and merchandise to box office attendants, ushering, game night promotions, and many more. The team bills volunteering as an opportunity for participants to receive free tickets to a game of their choice, as the more games volunteers work, the more tickets they can receive. There are opportunities to meet and interact with the players and receive discounts at the Barn, the Chiefs’ merchandise store.

Prospective volunteers are invited to contact Chiefs volunteer coordinator Kathi Karah at kathi_karah@hotmail.com, or fill out the volunteer form at https://chilliwackchiefs.net/team/volunteers/.

The 2022-23 season features an earlier start time of 6 p.m., and includes such highlights as a toque and teddy bear toss night on December 10, Alumni Night on December 17, Skate with the Chiefs on January 29, and St. Patty’s Night on March 17.

“This is probably the best schedule we’ve ever had here in Chilliwack,” said Barry Douglas, team governor and vice-president of business operations. “The schedule was designed to not only give the fans the best possible experience but also mirror more of a college hockey format.”

The schedule includes 14 Saturdays, which will see the puck now drop at 6 p.m.

“We hosted a few extra games this past season at the Coliseum after the schedule was forced to change with the B.C. floods. When we hosted those games, we went with a 6 p.m. start time. During those games, we got a lot of positive feedback and wanted to continue down that path,” said Douglas.

As well, the Chiefs will play 7 Fridays (7 p.m. puck drop), 3 Sundays (5 p.m. puck drop), and just 2 Wednesdays (7 p.m. puck drop) at the Coliseum.

Across the league, this year’s schedule includes 83 per cent prime-night games on Fridays and Saturdays. Before the pandemic, the league hovered around 65 per cent over five years.

There are also 3.41 days for every one regular-season game due to the extended season length. Before COVID-19, the league was at 2.95 days for every one regular-season
game over five years.

This allows for more practices, gym time, and more recovery time for BCHL athletes, Douglas said.

The schedule does not include dates for the BCHL Showcase, where the Chiefs will play two regular-season games. The schedule for that event will be released at a later time.

89.5 JR Country and the Chilliwack Chiefs have teamed up to broadcast a game of the week starting this fall.
