PPC leader Maxime Bernier makes stops in Chilliwack and Abbotsford

CHILLIWACK — Maxime Bernier, leader of the People’s Party of Canada (PPC), made a stop in Chilliwack and Abbotsford Tuesday (Aug. 16) as part of his Summer Leader’s Tour.

At the Coast Hotel in Chilliwack, Bernier was greeted by a room full of supporters as he spoke vivaciously about what his party stands for.

“A lot of people don’t know the PPC, don’t know our policies, and my goal is to explain our policies because, like I said, we are doing politics differently,” he said.

In an interview with Fraser Valley Today, the PPC leader emphasized the importance of building the party with the right candidates.

“I’m here, and I know that we will have the full slate of candidates when the time comes for an election,” he said. “And that’s what I’m doing; that’s why I’m travelling. We have about 100 candidates that are approved for the next election.”

Bernier remarked that what he said in 2019 is what he still stands by presently; and further said the PPC does politics based on “principles and conviction” rather than compromise.

“Usually, traditional politicians are doing politics based on surveys and polling, and they are telling you what you want to hear,” he said. “They want to appeal to your emotions, like they did with COVID-19. Fear was a big driver of our behaviours, and they used that. We don’t use that—we want to appeal to the intelligence of people, and we won’t compromise. Maybe our candidates will have fewer votes, but I prefer that, and I believe that we have the right ideas.”

Bernier also touched on the pipeline, and said that as much as education is key, it is also the responsibility of the federal government.

“In 2022, you can be in pipelines that will be safe for the environment, the population,” he said. “And actually, if you look at the support for the pipeline, all the First Nations agreed with the pipeline. So, we must understand that. And we must be able to build pipelines, not only for the prosperity of our country, but also for the unity of our country.”

Bernier will be in Armstrong, B.C. on Wednesday, Aug. 17.
