CHILLIWACK — On Monday afternoon (Aug. 8), the Chilliwack Curling Club will be hosting a blood drive with Canadian Blood Services. Bruce Renwick, general manager for the Chilliwack Curling Club, said the club is happy to host the blood drive and wants to give back to the community.

“We were fortunate enough to be able to help out Canadian Blood Services with a place for them to do a blood drive,” Renwick said. “They lost their places to do them in the summer, and fortunately they came to us, and we were able to help them.”

Associate director for BC and Yukon donor relations for Canadian Blood Services, Gayle Voyer, said since July 1, there has been a steady decline in blood donations and the organization is urgently seeking eligible donors to help fill the gap.

“The biggest thing is that our national inventory currently continues to meet the needs of patients, but with the 57,000 open appointments that must be filled before the end of August across Canada, the need is ongoing,” Voyer said. “The need for blood is constant. We had a small number of donors that were supporting our blood system during COVID, and currently we have our lowest donor base that we’ve had in a decade.”

Voyer remarked that people looking to donate can call 1-888-2-DONATE if they have any questions, and an eligibility quiz can be taken at blood.ca prior to donating.

“We have seen several donors step up, so I think we’re looking better than we were this morning,” she said. “So, thank you to the community; and if someone wants to book today, and they can’t fit in, then I would just encourage them to please book for the next event in the community.”

Renwick said aside from proving a space, some Chilliwack Curling Club members themselves will be lining up to give blood at this afternoon’s drive.

“The City was good enough to provide us with this wonderful facility, so we like to give back to the community anytime we can,” he said. “We take to heart the Chilliwack Curling and Community Centre that it says outside our building.”

Bookings for blood donation can be made at blood.ca or with the GiveBlood app. Voyer said to prepare to give, donors need to be hydrated, have something to eat an hour before their donation, ensure they’re feeling well, and need to bring a government-issued I.D.

“If you’ve never donated, please consider donating for the first time,” she said. “Just a reminder that everything we do is to be able to meet the needs of hospital patients. So, if people are looking for a way to help in their community, the time is now.”

The blood drive at the Chilliwack Curling and Community Centre begins at 2 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. (Aug. 8).
