AGASSIZ — Another month, another drug seizure at Kent Institution thanks to the efforts of diligent correctional staff.

A package containing contraband and unauthorized items with an estimated value of nearly $54,000 was seized on July 6 at the maximum-security federal institution, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) announced Tuesday (Jul. 12).

The contraband and unauthorized items seized included methamphetamine and other drugs, drug paraphernalia, two cell phones, and telecommunication-related items. The total estimated institutional value of this seizure is $53,900.

Additionally, in a search conducted on July 7, two cell phones and methamphetamine were seized. The estimated institutional value of this seizure is $7,000.

The police have been notified and the institution is investigating.

Prison staff intercepted a significant amount of illicit substances in June. Kent personnel confiscated 36.6 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 1.5 grams of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), 42 nicotine patches, and four grams of opiates on June 6 and 9. The contraband seizures were valued at $25,540.

The CSC uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These tools include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors.

CSC is heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.

CSC has set up a telephone tip line for all federal institutions so that it may receive additional information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions. These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, and staff members working at CSC institutions.

The toll-free number, 1‑866‑780‑3784, helps ensure that the information shared is protected and that callers remain anonymous.
