CHILLIWACK – Canada Day activities in Chilliwack start with a sizzle and end with a boom.

And whether your palate hungers for pancakes or hot dogs, or you just want to cool off in the pool for free, there’s something for every resident and family in Chilliwack, right down to a free concert in the park in the evening thanks to Vancouver band Blues Hoodoo.

The Kiwanis Clubs of Sardis and Chilliwack kick things off with their annual pancake breakfast happening from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Evergreen Hall near downtown Chilliwack. The price is just $5. Proceeds benefit the service club. COVID-19 safety measures will be in place.

Kiwanis is locally known for sponsoring the Super Reader literacy program in Chilliwack schools with the help of its volunteers. It also has a subsidized housing complex, Kiwanis Place, that it operates for women and families with young children, in partnership with BC Housing.

Later in the morning, the volunteers at the Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department are serving up hot dogs, by donation, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The rural department is located at 48685 Chilliwack Lake Road.

For families that don’t mind a roughly 45-minute drive from Chilliwack, Fort Langley National Historic Site features free admission on Canada Day between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The site offers a children’s play area, gold panning, audio tours and much more. Fort Langley is the former fur trading post for the Hudson’s Bay Company.

With the weather forecast expected to reach the mid-20s under sunny skies, what better way to cool off than a free dip in the pool at the Landing Centre from 10 a.m. to noon, or at the Cheam Leisure Centre from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The Columbia Valley Residents Association will host a Canada Day celebration at the Columbia Valley Community Centre, 1202 Kosikar Road. The festivities begin with a parade at 11 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend the parade, which will feature decorated bikes, tractors, floats and other vehicles. Adding to the Columbia Valley fun is the return of the soapbox derby, kids games, concessions, 50/50 draw, face painting and a cash-only market.

Over the lunch hour, there will be free ice skating at the Chilliwack Coliseum, 45323 Hodgins Avenue between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The City of Chilliwack’s sponsored events kick off at 5 p.m. at Townsend Park (45130 Wolfe Road) with food trucks, face painting, and the always popular Ever After Princesses.

Blues Hoodoo takes to the stage at 7 p.m. at Townsend Park. The band draws heavily from the 1970s instrumental jazz and funk fusion era.

The evening wraps up with a fireworks show that will light up the sky starting at 10 p.m.
