City of Mission urges province to step up as homeless are housed at local rec centre following fire
MISSION – The City of Mission is calling on the province and a local non-profit to provide some kind of lodging for over two dozen residents after a fire broke out at a homeless shelter over the weekend, causing their relocation to a local rec centre.
In a statement, the municipality says it wants the province, B.C. Housing, and Mission Community Services Society to urgently secure temporary, appropriate housing accommodations for people who were displaced by Saturday’s fire at Haven in the Hollow.
After the fire on Saturday, the city activated its Emergency Management Plan and set up a reception centre in the community gym at the Mission Leisure Centre to provide immediate shelter and support.
Haven in the Hollow had been providing shelter to approximately 55 individuals at the time of Saturday’s fire. Roughly 30 people are currently staying at the temporary reception centre, which is staffed 24 hours a day.
