MAPLE RIDGE – Police in Maple Ridge are calling out the poor decision making of a 16-year-old male e-dirt bike rider after the teen was caught doing wheelies and illegal street manoeuvres and later crashed as he attempted to elude police.

Maple Ridge Mounties say one of its Road Safety Target Team officers was driving in an unmarked police vehicle last weekend when he observed an illegal electronic dirtbike in the 24800 block of 100 Avenue performing wheelies and passing motor vehicles at approximately 70 km/h.

Once police saw the rider head down a dead-end street, the officer activated his emergency lights and siren. Police say the driver failed to stop for the officer and actually sped up before attempting to drive off onto an off-road trail.

The rider subsequently crashed his dirt bike into a grassy ditch area and was taken into custody by the officer.

No injuries were sustained and the rider declined emergency services.

After the arrival of the 16-year-old rider’s parental guardian, the youth was charged with multiple motor vehicle violations, including driving without due care, failing to stop for police, no insurance, and no driver’s license.

The dirt bike was also impounded for stunting in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Act.

Not including the impound charge, the cost of tickets exceeded $1,300, police said. The youth and his parent were “strongly cautioned” about the recklessness of the youth’s actions and warned that such violations could have been criminal code consequences.

Police say the model of dirt bike that was impounded can reach speeds up to 100km/h.
