MISSION — First responders were on scene of a hazardous materials incident at a residential neighbourhood in Mission Friday morning (June 12).

Scanner traffic reported at around 9:18 a.m., police were paged out to a home in the 32800 block of 1st Avenue, west of Alder Street, to give medical aid to a patient who was possibly covered in “white powder”.

Roughly 20 minutes later, fire crews were called in to help with the hazmat, followed by public works crews “due to the nature of the material”.

“There is not believed to be a risk to anyone outside of the involved residence,” Cpl. Harrison Mohr told Fraser Valley Today. “First responders are taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of the occupants of that residence and first responders themselves.”

Videos from the scene show police blocking off the area, with one officer wearing a gas mask prior to hazmat personnel arriving.

Nearby witnesses say a woman claiming to have a cup of ricin powder, a chemical poison made of castor beans, was threatening to come towards police with the substance.

One person from inside the home has been taken to hospital as a precaution.

The situation has since resolved.

More details will be added as they become available.
