MISSION – Mission Councillor Jag Gill announced Wednesday morning that he will run for mayor in the fall municipal election, hoping to replace Mission Mayor Paul Horn who will not be seeking another term.

In a video posted to social media, Gill said residents want a city government that works for them in a number of areas.

“People want a city that works, safe streets, responsible decisions, a livable community, growth that makes sense and is tied to infrastructure, support for local businesses, and a council that is transparent, and stays focused on the issues that people deal with every single day,” Gill said. “I’ve always believed that leadership starts with listening, being accessible, doing the work, leading by example, and making decisions based on what’s best for the community, not politics.”

Reflecting his popularity throughout the city, Gill received the most council votes in the 2018 and 2022 elections.

He said he’s ready to accept the responsibility that comes with being mayor in a growing city.

“Mission is growing and the decisions we make over the next few years will shape the city for generations to come,” Gill said. “I’m ready for that responsibility, and truthfully, I want that responsibility because I care deeply about this community. and I believe that strong, transparent and focused leadership matters right now more than ever. I would be truly honoured to earn your suport for mayor.”

He said the city of Mission has given him plenty of opportunities and has shaped who he is as a person.

“For the past several years I’ve had the privilege of serving this community on council. I’ve listened, I’ve learned, and through it all one thing has become very clear to me: Mission is a community that people care deeply about,” Gill said. “This city has given me a lot. It’s shaped who I am and after many conversations with residents, friends, local business owners, families across this community, and most importantly, my own family, I’m officially announcing my campaign for mayor of the City of Mission.”

Voting day is on Saturday, October 17 later this year.
