POPKUM – It wasn’t a great day for a novice driver who crashed in the Popkum area last week, but it could have been even worse.

Agassiz RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener says Mounties responded to a single-vehicle collision on Popkum Road. A vehicle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed before losing control and leaving the roadway, ending up in a farmer’s field.

Two passengers sustained minor injuries, Corporal Kiener said. On top of that, the driver showed signs of impairment and received a 12-hour driving prohibition based on roadside testing results. Violation tickets were also issued, as the driver was a novice driver with too many passengers.

Police did not reveal the time and date of the crash.

The incident was one of 66 calls for service recorded by the Agassiz RCMP detachment for the week of Monday, May 25 through Sunday, May 31.

In another related incident in the Agassiz area last week, Agassiz RCMP received an automatic crash detection alert from a cellular phone in the area of McCallum Road and Hot Springs Road. Attending officers discovered a vehicle that had collided with a power pole. No injuries were reported, but police say signs of driver impairment were observed. Roadside testing confirmed impairment, resulting in an immediate roadside prohibition. The vehicle was impounded and towed.
