Chilliwack, Mission RCMP to conduct backcountry patrols this long weekend to ensure ORV, rec user safety

CHILLIWACK/MISSION – Mounties with the Upper Fraser Valley and Mission RCMP detachments both say they will be conducting backcountry and remote patrols during the upcoming long weekend to ensure off-road riders and recreational users are staying safe.

Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener says officers respond to preventable crashes involving ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes every single year. She says these incidents typically involve excessive speed, alcohol or drug impairment, failure to wear helmets, or lack of rider experience.

“ORVs are a popular way to enjoy the outdoors in the Upper Fraser Valley, but preparation and responsible riding are essential. Riders are encouraged to plan ahead, ride within their ability, and be mindful of conditions,” Cpl. Kiener said.

Before heading out, police remind riders to:

  • Wear a properly fitted helmet and appropriate protective gear
  • Never operate an ORV while impaired by alcohol or drugs
  • Ride at a safe speed for the terrain and conditions
  • Stay on designated trails and respect private property
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return

Riders are also reminded that when operating on Forest Service Roads (FSRs), all ORVs must have:

  • valid registration,
  • liability insurance,
  • a visible issued plate or sticker,
  • approved helmets,
  • required safety equipment in proper working order.

Corporal Kiener says RCMP personnel will be conducting backcountry patrols throughout the May long weekend to promote safe and lawful ORV use.

“Making smart decisions and following the rules helps ensure everyone gets home safely. Ride prepared, ride responsibly—and we’ll see you out there,” Cpl. Kiener said.

Over in Mission, Mission RCMP personnel say they’ll be going “wild this weekend” by heading out into the wilderness areas throughout the Victoria Day weekend.

Police say the backcountry areas in and around Mission are known for their recreational opportunities. From rustic camping to off-roading, hiking, biking, boating and more, recreational users will find plenty to enjoy.

“Officers will be out along the Forest Service Roads in police vehicles, ATVs, and the detachment’s side-by-side, and boaters on Stave Lake can also expect to see the detachment’s police boat out on the lake during the weekend, checking to ensure people are not boating while impaired, and have the necessary safety equipment on board,” Mission RCMP said.

Police say whether residents are heading out by foot, on two-wheels, four-wheels, or by watercraft, here are a few reminders:

• There are many places where there is no cell service. Ensure someone in town knows where you are going, when you expect to be back, and what to do if you don’t arrive home on time (hint…call us!). Always consider the possibility of a vehicle breakdown, a twisted ankle, a bent prop, or other unforeseen circumstances;

• Impaired boating is illegal, and impaired driving is illegal both on and off-road. Just don’t do it;

• No recreational shooting (including target practice) is allowed in most areas accessible by Forest Service Roads in the Mission area. Anyone found in violation could face fines, have their guns seized, or face criminal charges;

• If you see something unsafe happening in the backcountry, call 911. If you don’t have cell service at your location, note whatever details you can (specific location, vehicle description, etc), and report it to Mission RCMP when you are back in cell-service (604-826-7161).

“Enjoy your time out in the amazing wilderness areas around Mission this season, and give us a wave if you see us driving by. We’ll see you out there Mission!” Mission RCMP said.
