HARRISON/AGASSIZ – A Facebook group says five camping sites near Harrison Lake or west of the lake and managed by the Sts’ailes band have been temporarily closed for safety reasons effective immediately.

According to a notice from the West Harrison Camping & Reservations Group, Sts’ailes has informed the public that five of the rec sites it oversees on West Harrison will be temporarily closed for safety reasons, effective immediately.

The notice says it has been advised by Recreation Sites & Trails BC (RSTBC) that Sts’ailes must keep these campgrounds closed until they arrange to have dangerous trees felled and removed.

“We are complying because safety is our priority, but Sts’ailes recognizes the importance of these recreation sites to residents and visitors, particularly at the start of the camping season, and we sincerely regret the inconvenience this may cause,” the statement read.

The affected campgrounds include:

Chehalis River

Grace Lake

Twenty Mile Bay

Weaver Lake

Wood Lake

“Because these closures were entirely foreseeable and preventable, we encourage campers to write and call Provincial representatives, including RSTBC staff, to address the outstanding safety concerns with some urgency. Please insist on responsible Provincial involvement for safety related matters,” the statement read. “Sts’ailes remains committed to working with the Province of British Columbia to ensure that campgrounds can be reopened as soon as possible.”

Campers have been advised that any reservations they had for these affected sites will be automated cancelled and a full refund will be provided. Refunds will be processed accordingly but could take up to 30 days to appear on a credit card or PayPal account.

The statement encouraged affected campers to reach out to provincial and government officials to voice their concerns.
