ABBOTSFORD — Patients in the Fraser Valley will soon be getting faster care as construction begins on a $4.95 million upgrade at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre.

The hospital is stripping down its existing MRI and refurbishing it into a new Signa Artist 1.5 EVO MR30, which could perform some exams up to 50 per cent faster than the current unit.

Features include clearer images, tilting for better head and neck positioning and less sound to cut down anxiety in claustrophobic or cognitively impaired patients.

“This is an important step forward in ensuring that the Fraser Valley community continues to receive timely, high-quality care,” said Minister of Health Josie Osborne.

“With approximately 8,000 MRI scans conducted at Abbotsford Regional Hospital last year, we are providing state-of-the-art technology to help reduce wait times and improve access to life-saving imaging for residents of the Fraser Valley.”

Advanced MRIs can help detect brain and spine abnormalities, as well as tumours, cysts and cancers in the breast, brain, abdomen and more.

A mobile MRI will remain on site during construction to ensure patient access throughout the project. The modernized MRI is expected to operate in 2026.
