Chilliwack Cultural Centre to host celebration of literary freedom Friday evening

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack Cultural Centre is hosting an evening celebrating the freedom of expression this evening (Oct. 10).

The Art of Banned Books invites residents to explore the history and legacy of banned written works over the years, such as To Kill a Mockingbird and 1984, and to consider whose voices might be silenced with the loss of literary freedom.

“Canada has only just begun its journey to learn the truths of silenced voices so we can reconcile and heal from the past; the conversations to be had at events like the Art of Banned Books are now more important than ever,” said Jessica Rae Goudswaard, event organizer.

“As a passionate reader myself, I invite you to join us in the discussions over why Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson has been challenged as well as explore other commonly banned books.”
