BC Hydro announces Abbotsford substation expansion

Sep 29, 2025 | 10:28 AM

ABBOTSFORD — BC Hydro has announced an expansion plan for its Clayburn Substation in Abbotsford. The utility says the work is being down to meet the increasing electricity demand across the Fraser Valley.

The upgrade will increase the substation’s capacity by 50 per cent. Construction is scheduled to begin immediately and conclude in 2028.

As part of the project, workers will install a new transformer to expand capacity to up to 35,000 more homes. BC Hydro says the upgrade is needed to meet the expected growth of the Fraser Valley.

BC Hydro expects the Fraser Valley population to grow to more than 500,000 people by 2050. It forecasts the major growth to occur in Abbotsford and Chilliwack, especially in areas such as the Lickman and Young corridors, Mount Lehman and Sumas.
