UPDATE 1:57 p.m. WEDNESDAY: As reported by NBC News, CBS News, and the BBC, Turning Point CEO Charlie Kirk has died after being shot in Utah.

Original story:

OREM, Utah — Charlie Kirk, the CEO and co-founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was shot Wednesday at an event at a Utah college, Turning Point said.

According to Salt Lake City news outlet KSL-TV, Kirk’s speech at Utah Valley University was part of the American Comeback Tour hosted by Turning Point USA. Several people attending the speech have confirmed a shot was fired.

KSL-TV is reporting that an alert UVU sent to students said a “single shot shot was fired on campus toward a visiting speaker.”

UVU was locked down in response while law enforcement responded. The shot rang out at 12:20 p.m., and Kirk was taken away from the location by his security, UVU said. Kirk is being treated and is in critical condition, a law enforcement official briefed on the shooting told the Associated Press.

The school said campus will be closed for the rest of the day and classes are canceled until further notice.

NBC News and The Associated Press are both reporting that Kirk is in critical condition at a Utah hospital.
