IIO clears Abbotsford police officers in Mission Bridge incident

Aug 14, 2025 | 12:48 PM

MISSION — The civilian watchdog tasked with investigating incidents involving police and serious injuries or fatalities has cleared the Abbotsford Police Department and its officers of any wrongdoing stemming from a January 2025 incident.

According to a statement, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. has now completed its investigation into a motor vehicle incident that occurred on January 24, 2025 that resulted in two people suffering injuries.

At about 12:30 a.m. that day, Abbotsford Police Department members attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a Ford Mustang in Mission. The Mustang did not stop and continued southbound towards the Mission Bridge.

A short time later, the Mustang was involved in a collision with a Hyundai Elantra on the Mission Bridge. The sole occupants of both vehicles were taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries.

The IIO was notified about the incident the same day, at which time the civilian watchdog initiated a probe.

The IIO’s chief civilian director has now reviewed the evidence – including video, witness statements and police records – and determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe any officer may have committed an offence.

The IIO investigation is now complete. However, due to a concurrent police investigation, the IIO’s public report will not be released on the IIO’s website until that process has concluded.
