CHILLIWACK — Several businesses in downtown Chilliwack remain closed after a structure fire early Wednesday caused extensive damage, including to a local RCMP community policing office.

More than a day after the fire, police don’t have a date for the reopening of the office, only saying it will remain closed for the foreseeable future.

Mounties say they were called to a fire around 12:25 a.m. on July 16 at 45873 Wellington Ave. It raced through a number of commercial units along in the area.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Chilliwack RCMP investigators are working alongside the Chilliwack Fire Department as the investigation continues.

While the office is closed, residents with crime prevention concerns or general inquiries are asked to call the Chilliwack RCMP’s main line at 604-792-4611. In-person assistance is available at the main RCMP detachment at 45924 Airport Rd.

Police are urging anyone with information about the fire to contact their local detachment, email UFVRD_MEDIA@rcmp-grc.gc.ca or reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
