City to honour National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
CHILLIWACK — The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation takes place on Sept. 30, and Chilliwack City Council will be observing the day to nurture the relationship with Indigenous neighbours.
During the statutory holiday, city hall will be closed, and the day will provide an opportunity for citizens to acknowledge the history and lasting impact of residential schools.
Mayor Ken Popove said building relationships with local First Nations is an essential part of the truth and reconciliation process.
“Over the past year, as part of our learning journey, Chilliwack city council and senior staff participated in Historical Impacts Training through Stó:lō Nation. As a council, we will continue to look for learning opportunities and work on building relationships with local Indigenous leaders,” he said.
