Mounties issue safety reminder after e-scooter collision in Mission

MISSION — Scooter season is slowly rolling in– and so are the crashes.

At around 5:30 pm on February 26th, Mission RCMP said a car struck an 18-year-old e-scooter rider at the intersection of 11th Avenue and Taulbut Street.

The young man– who was not wearing a helmet– reportedly rode into the intersection without stopping, and the passing car couldn’t stop in time either. Although he wasn’t seriously injured, he was transported to hospital due to concussion-like symptoms.

Initial findings show that the car was not speeding, but the investigation is still ongoing.

“With an increasing number of youth using electric scooters, Mission RCMP encourage parents to remind their children of the basics of safe operation, and to always wear a helmet,” said police in a release Friday.

Only two days before the incident, an e-scooter rider in Chilliwack was also struck by a car and airlifted to hospital after travelling at high speeds.

The province launched a pilot project last year to study the safety of e-scooters on public roads.
