MISSION — The province has returned title to lands east of Fraser River Heritage Park in Mission to the LMS Society, marking a significant milestone under the Í:xel Sq’eq’ó agreement signed in July 2021. The LMS Society, representing the Leq’á:mel, Matsqui, and Sumas First Nations, celebrated the return as a step toward reconciliation and community development.

The lands, now subdivided, include a 50-hectare parcel to be leased to the City of Mission for public use as a community park. The park will be co-managed by the city and the LMS Society, with a goal of creating both recreational opportunities and cultural preservation. Two additional 5-hectare parcels will be developed by the LMS Development Corporation to support housing and foster economic and social growth in the area.

Í:xel Sq’eq’ó, a Hul’qumi’num phrase meaning “Together We Paddle,” reflects the collaborative spirit of the agreement. The Leq’á:mel, Matsqui, and Sumas First Nations have worked closely with the City of Mission to promote shared goals of cultural recognition, park accessibility, and economic opportunity.

“We look forward to co-developing a park management plan that benefits everyone in our community,” stated a City of Mission news release. The agreement strengthens ties between the First Nations and the city, setting a model for future partnerships.
