Black bear dies after attacking man, dog on Maple Ridge trail

MAPLE RIDGE – B.C.’s Conservation Officer Service (COS) says a black bear was killed during an attack in Maple Ridge on Wednesday.

In a statement, the COS said the incident happened around 2:30 p.m. on a trail near 240th Street, where a man was walking an off-leash dog.

Investigators say the bear initially engaged with the dog being walked by the man. “The owner was able to gain control of his dog and attempted to leave when the bear re-engaged,” the COS said.

“The man was injured as he fought with the bear. A group of nearby anglers came to assist. The bear died.”

Officials confirmed the man sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The bear is undergoing a necropsy at an Abbotsford lab to determine factors that may have influenced its behavior.

“A COS investigation, which included a sweep of the area, examination of physical evidence, and interviews with the victim, determined the bear was killed in self-defence,” the statement added.

The province says no charges will be laid as a result of the investigation.

The COS urged vigilance in its message to the public, noting that bears remain active in many areas during this time of year, particularly in mild weather.

“The public is encouraged to take precautions in case of wildlife encounters, including being aware of your surroundings, leashing pets, and travelling in groups,” the COS said.
