Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt could get snow accumulations Friday
COQUIHALLA HIGHWAY — There have been flirtatious tastes of winter conditions at the peaks of highway passes this fall, but the first notable snowfall of the season for the southern Interior could be around the corner.
Environment Canada notes snowfall is expected for highway passes around Kamloops from 5:00 a.m. Friday (Nov. 1) to 5:00 p.m. Saturday.
Speaking to CFJC Today, Environment Canada meteorologist Armel Castellan says the Pennask Summit on the Okanagan Connector and the Coquihalla Summit on Highway 5 from Hope to Merritt could receive five to 10 centimetres of snow. It’s due to a strengthening low pressure system that’s gaining a second life as it goes offshore from Vancouver Island and further south into the Interior.
“Paulson Summit will be an area that will be quite white. A little bit of wind as well,” Castellan says. “It’s not just going to be the highway crews catching up to the amounts on the surface but also potentially visibility being affected. I would definitely recommend looking at the forecast and DriveBC for the conditions before your planned drive in those directions. Ensure you’re making a wise decision. Sometimes it’s worth postponing travel just in case you have that flexibility.”
