CHILLIWACK — YMCA personnel that manage and operate Chilliwack’s two municipal recreation centres say the leisure pool at the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre will be closed for several days after glass somehow fell and entered the pool.

According to a brief statement posted Monday evening (Sept. 30), the YMCA did not go into extensive details about the “unexpected incident” but only said glass from an overhead source entered the centre’s leisure pool. It said the safety and well-being of pool users was its top priority, and would require the temporarily closure of the leisure pool to ensure all glass is removed.

“This will require us to drain, clean and refill the pool. For a pool of this size, the process will take several days,” Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre staff said. “During this temporary closure, swim lessons are paused. Our main pool remains open.”

The YMCA said it apologized for the inconvenience and would post on its website and social media when the leisure pool has reopened.

The automated phone system to the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre says the leisure pool is currently closed, and a female who answered the phone Tuesday morning said the leisure pool should be open before the end of the week.

In an unrelated note, the YMCA said the Chilliwack Landing will be closed from 6 a.m. until noon on Friday, October 11 due to maintenance on the building’s water system.
