Kevin Falcon to fold BC United Party, suspend campaign

UPDATE WEDNESDAY AT 1:05 P.M.: Multiple media outlets, including CFJC Today out of Kamloops and Global BC, are reporting that BC United will suspend its campaign and Opposition Leader Kevin Falcon will not run in this fall’s provincial election.

VICTORIA — A BC United legislator says he’s called an emergency meeting of the party caucus to discuss the future of British Columbia’s official Opposition, less than eight weeks before the provincial election.

Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier says he’s been unable to reach Leader Kevin Falcon amid reports the party is folding, while the rival BC Conservative Party says leader John Rustad will be making a “major statement” about the election at 2:40 p.m.

Bernier says there’s “obviously something going on” but he was unable to say exactly what, and his phone has been “blowing up” with calls from concerned staff and other MLAs.

According to a report from Amy Judd of GlobalBC, published on CFJC Today (Kamloops), Kevin Falcon is expected to fold the BC United Party on Wednesday and suspend his campaign, Global News has learned.

It is unclear what will happen to the party’s assets at this time but Falcon, along with BC Conservative leader John Rustad, is expected to address the issue on Wednesday (Aug. 28) afternoon.

Some of the United candidates will run for BC Conservatives. This reportedly includes Tom Shypitka in Kootenay East, Peter Milobar in Kamloops, Jaime Stein in Vancouver-Langara and Ian Paton in Delta South.
