UPDATE: Highway 1 eastbound west of Chilliwack finally clear

Aug 21, 2024 | 9:16 AM

UPDATE WEDNESDAY AT 2:37 P.M.: Drive BC now says eastbound Highway 1 has fully reopened west of Chilliwack following an earlier vehicle incident near the Sumas Drainage Canal bridge. Motorists should continue to expect delays and heavy congestion.

Original story from 9:16 a.m. Wednesday below:

CHILLIWACK — DriveBC says eastbound Highway 1 is closed east of No. 3 Road (exit 104) due to a vehicle incident.

According to a post from the Ministry at 8:44 a.m., Drive BC says Hwy. 1 is closed at the Sumas Drainage Canal bridge due to a vehicle incident. Emergency responders are on scene.

One Facebook user said the vehicle may have involved up to four vehicles, including one vehicle that was sandwiched against a highway shoulder wall. The Facebook user said: “Bad accident Highway 1, eastbound, 1 white car sandwiched, 1 car against the sidewall. Not looking good. Just after No. 3 road.”

While DriveBC says no detour is available, one X/Twitter user says commercial traffic can divert via Highway 11, 7, and 9. Non-commercial traffic can use No. 3 Road, continue onto Boundary Road before heading onto Keith Wilson Road, travelling on Chadsey Road northbound and then heading west on Yale Road before getting back onto Hwy. 1 at exit 109, Yale Road West.
