Eclectic retail store in downtown Chilliwack set to close after nearly 2 decades in business

CHILLIWACK — Amethyst Books & Essence, an eclectic retail store selling books, crystals, incense, music and all things metaphysical, is set to close its doors on Young Road in Chilliwack for good after nearly 19 years in business.

Janet from Amethyst told Fraser Valley Today through Facebook Messenger last Friday, July 19 that the retail store does not have an official closing date just yet, but the store’s landlord has given Amethyst a notice to vacate by the end of October. The store announced its closure in a social media post dated July 11.

“We hope to be out sooner if we can, and that depends on how quickly we can sell our products and fixtures and dismantle the place,” Janet said. “We will be here through August for sure.”

Janet says Amethyst has been in the community since opening in October 2005. The store carved out a niche as a one-of-a-kind business, growing, changing and serving the local metaphysical community ever since, according to its website.

“Getting to know our customers and their wants and needs has been one of our greatest pleasures,” Amethyst wrote on its website. “We love people, books, crystals, incense, music, and everything metaphysical! We welcome the opportunity to serve you and to provide you with just the right item to enhance your personal or spiritual journey.”

The store billed itself as Chilliwack’s most spiritual/metaphysical shop, and offered a broad spectrum of events, workshops, books, tools, products and gifts.

“You will see by the comments on our announcement post that our community/customers will miss us, as we will miss them,” Janet said. “It’s kind of the end of an era. We are not planning to relocate.”
