Convicted murderer dies at Abbotsford prison

ABBOTSFORD — Correctional Service Canada says a man who had been serving an indefinite prison sentence for murder dating back to the 1980s has died while in custody at a prison in Abbotsford.
CSC says Eugene Raymond Benoit, an inmate from the Regional Treatment Centre (Pacific Institution), died on Saturday, July 13 of apparent natural causes.
At the time of death, the inmate had been serving an indeterminate sentence that began on February 23, 1987, for second-degree murder.
Like all cases involving the death of an inmate, CSC intends to review the circumstances of Benoit’s deaath. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
