Authorities issue multiple fines to offenders for violating campfire ban in the Chilliwack River Valley

CHILLIWACK — Despite widespread messaging through digital news outlets, radio, TV and social media, scofflaws in the Chilliwack River Valley decided the province-wide campfire prohibition that took effect on Friday, July 12 didn’t apply to them.

So, authorities took appropriate action.

According to a social media post dated Sunday, July 14, the Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department teamed up with the Chilliwack RCMP to issue several fines and extinguish “numerous fires” Saturday night.

“Despite all the radio, TV, social media posts, and the signage, people are still not getting the message,” CRVFD wrote on Facebook. “Please respect the restrictions and keep our communities safe.”

According to scanner traffic Saturday night, Chilliwack River Valley Fire Chief Mike Danyluk sought assistance from the Chilliwack RCMP for a burning complaint near Chilliwack Lake Road and Edwards Road. CRVFD reminded people at the scene of the burning complaint about the bylaws, but the individuals reportedly grew hostile and added more wood to a fire. The transmission dispatch occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Due to the increase in dry fuels and prolonged temperatures throughout B.C., a province-wide campfire prohibition took effect on Friday, July 12 at noon.

According to the B.C. government, anyone found in contravention of an open burning ban may be issued a violation ticket of up to $1,150.

The Chilliwack RCMP detachment has not issued any kind of news release about tickets being issued over the weekend.
