Jun 6, 2024 | 6:12 AM

CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack Fire Department says 25 firefighters from four fire halls responded to a basement fire on Young Road early Thursday.

According to a statement from Assistant Fire Chief Chris Wilson, responding firefighters were initially dispatched for the report of smoke observed coming from the residence in the 9800 block of Young Road. On arrival, firefighters witnessed grey smoke emanating from the chimney and eaves of a single-family detached home.

Wilson said crews quickly secured a water supply, entered the home and located a small fire in a room in the basement of the home. An offensive attack was utilized to extinguish the fire. Due to the quick actions of crews, the fire did not extend into the walls or basement ceiling of the home and was confined to the contents of the room.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported at this fire.

According to scanner traffic at 2:48 a.m., the following Chilliwack Fire personnel and units were paged: Duty chief, Tower 1, Rescue 1, Air 1, Engines 2, 4-2, 5 and 6, and Rehab 6 were paged for a second-alarm structure fire.

Fraser Valley Today visited the home at approximately 5:35 a.m. Thursday morning and saw light burn marks on the exterior of the home. The home appears to be occupied, unlike many other fires that have happened in older abandoned homes surrounding the downtown core.

Chilliwack RCMP had two of its SUV units stationed outside the home. Yellow caution tape had been strung around the home to impede access.

The fire did not spread to a multi-storey, high density residential project just to the east on Riverside Drive.
