Chilliwack Mural Festival faces possible funding cut from City Council
CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack City Council will mull over a staff recommendation to provide a reduced amount of funding for the 2024 edition of the Chilliwack Mural Festival.
The annual event has applied to City Hall for $12 thousand in funding for the three-day event, which is planned to run from August 15 – 17. That figure is up from the $7,500 in city funds it received in 2023. However, a staff report for Tuesday’s (Apr. 2) regular council meeting, recommends council cut funding support to $5 thousand this year.
The staff report says the figure is based on guidance from the Community Development Initiatives Funding policy and is consistent with funding for other large special events such as the Pride Festival and the Downtown Business Improvement Association’s Car Show.
In its funding application, festival organizers report a budget of $185 thousand in 2024. That figure is up substantially from the 2023 budget of $111 thousand.
