FVRD to draft public notice policy

CHILLIWACK — Fraser Valley Regional District staff will be drafting a public notice policy for its consideration around how it advertises public notices.

According to a staff report from Jaime Van Nes, director of legislative services for FVRD, the Community Charter and the Local Government Act require that all local governments provide advanced public notice on matters of public interest such as public hearings, elections and disposition of land. In February 2022, changes to the Local Government Act afforded local governments with flexibility on how they wish to provide the required public notice.

Samantha Piper, FVRD spokesperson, said staff will be drafting a public notice policy for the FVRD board’s consideration at a future meeting, and the board will consider adopting public notice bylaw No. 1741, 2024 at the same meeting. Having both a bylaw and policy follows best practice guidelines where a government elects to adopt a public notice bylaw, Piper said.

The public notice policy may provide customized details for each individual electoral area on what additional methods of public notice that could be provided, especially with specific, hard-to-reach rural areas.
