A similar project is planned for Keith Wilson Road over the next year. The project is estimated to be substantially completed by March 2025, the City of Chilliwack estimates.

CHILLIWACK — It could be a tough commute on Tyson Road and Keith Wilson Road in Chilliwack over the next 12 months.

Liana Wiebe, communications manager for the City of Chilliwack, confirmed in an email to Fraser Valley Today Tuesday (Feb. 13) that construction could begin on Tyson Road in late February, followed by construction on Keith Wilson Road in early March, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays. The city’s engineering department oversees construction timelines.

Both roads are undergoing long awaited public works improvements. Crews are currently removing vegetation and conducting surveying on Tyson Road prior to the construction start date.

During the next 12 months, Wiebe confirmed, there will be temporary changes to traffic patterns including single-lane alternating traffic.

“There will also be times when the traffic control set-ups are able to accommodate the free flow of traffic,” Wiebe said. “The contractor will make every effort to minimize disruptions during construction. Substantial completion of this project is estimated for March 2025.”

Construction activities for Tyson Road consist of the following:

  • Curb installation and multi-use pathways on both sides of Tyson Road
  • A signalized intersection upgrade/widening at South Sumas Road
  • 1,270 metres of road widening/reconstruction
  • Drainage works
  • Paving
  • Streetlighting
  • Street trees

The city says multi-use pathways will be located behind the curb, away from the travel lane section of the roadway. Once completed, the municipality states Tyson Road will become the first north-south thoroughfare in Chilliwack with continuous cycle and pedestrian facilities. The roughly 1-kilometre section without sidewalks represents the only section of Tyson Road without sidewalks along the 8.5-km corridor. The city has ranked it among its highest priority projects in its Active Transportation Plan, and identified it as a core route in the city’s Cycle Vision Plan.

Tyson Road will receive curb installation and multi-use pathways on both sides of the road along with 1,270 metres of road widening/reconstruction.

Keith Wilson Road will undergo similar improvements in a stretch of road between Hipwell Place, near Canadian Forces Base Chilliwack, and Garrison Boulevard. These public works improvement consist of the following:

  • Sidewalk and bike lanes on the north side and a multi-use pathway on the south side
  • Approximately 730 metres of road widening/reconstruction
  • Drainage works
  • Paving
  • Street trees
  • Curb installation
  • Road geometry improvements to reduce westbound traffic entering the roundabout
