CHILLIWACK — As January 1 marks the start of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is rallying Fraser Valley residents to join the cause and challenge the stigma surrounding dementia. Despite one in two British Columbians holding the belief that a dementia diagnosis signifies the end of a meaningful life, the awareness month aims to spotlight individuals on the dementia journey who continue to discover joy and purpose.

The Alzheimer Society’s programs, focused on living well and building new community connections, emphasize self-advocacy to empower people affected by dementia. Local research underscores the pervasive sense of hopelessness experienced by those with dementia and their caregivers. The organization is committed to dismantling this stigma, highlighting the myriad ways individuals can lead fulfilling lives despite the challenges posed by dementia.

Crucial to the Alzheimer Society’s mission is the support of the community. To enhance their efforts, all donations made until December 31 will be matched up to $65,000, doubling the impact of each contribution. Donations can by made by clicking here.

Through the First Link dementia support initiative, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. supports individuals affected by dementia to receive the necessary support and education at any stage of the disease. The call to action during Alzheimer’s Awareness Month is to challenge misconceptions, promote understanding, and foster a community that empowers individuals on the dementia journey to live their lives with dignity and purpose.
