VANCOUVER — The Central Coast Regional District has issued an evacuation order for a 20 kilometres along the Dean River Valley, about 50 kilometres north of Bella Coola.

The district initially issued an alert Wednesday, but upgraded that to an order Friday.

The B-C Wildfire Service says the Dean River fire was lightning-caused and is about three-square-kilometres in size.

It affects the geographical area along the Dean River Valley east from Kimsquit Bay, extending to approximately 36 kilometres along the Dean River Valley.

Meantime an evacuation order has been expanded by the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako to protect the members of the Saik’uz First Nation in northern B.C. The area is under threat from the Finger Lake wildfire.

The BC Wildfire Service says the Finger Lake wildfire was lightning-caused and is 270 hectares in size. It’s located southwest of Finger Lake and approximately 60 kilometres southwest of Vanderhoof. It was first discovered on July 7. The original evacuation order was put in place a day later.

As of Saturday morning, the BC Wildfire Service says there are 380 active wildfires burning across the province. 241 of those fires are considered to be out of control. And 20 fires are considered fires of note, meaning it is highly visible or poses a potential threat to public safety.

Canada’s emergency preparedness minister has approved a request for federal assistance to help firefighters and emergency management personnel in B-C battle the wildfires.

Bill Blair announced the move in a tweet yesterday, saying the help will come from across federal departments and include military resources.

This came after B-C’s Minister of Emergency Management Bowinn Ma said Thursday she had made the request.
