CHILLIWACK — On the upside, the good news is that full construction of the long-awaited improvements to the heavily traveled intersection of South Sumas and Vedder Road has finally begun.

However, it’s expected to last approximately three months through to September, meaning there could be heavy traffic congestion during rush hour, peak periods, or summertime travel to Cultus Lake.

Motorists who make their way through the Vedder Road corridor can’t say they weren’t warned. The city of Chilliwack had an orange mobile billboard on northbound Vedder Road over the weekend, one on Promontory Road near Save-On-Foods Friday night, and one on southbound Vedder Road indicating construction would begin today, Monday, June 12.

Contracting crews were on scene Monday morning on the southeast corner while motorists had two open lanes southbound and single-lane traffic northbound coming from Watson Road.

The companies behind the design-build team consist of Ballina Contracting, Urban Systems, and Thurber Engineering.

The project, which has been sidelined by repeated delays, involves a traffic signal expansion and approximately 260 meters of road widening along with paving, drainage, streetlights, curb and sidewalk installation.
