That’s why this summer, we’re upgrading four rest stops, including the Highway 1 Kamloops Lake Rest area, with improvements like new lighting and signage, updating playground equipment, increasing accessibility, and improving grounds and picnic areas. This is just the beginning, with more rest-stop upgrades planned across the province in future years.

This year, even more people will be exploring the province in electric vehicles, and our goal is to make sure that EVs can easily reach every corner of British Columbia’s electric highway by summer 2024. Currently, there are over 4300 electric vehicle charging stations across the province, and 960 of those are direct current fast chargers (DCFC). In the Fraser Valley alone, we have 266 public electric vehicle charging stations and 99 of them are DCFCs.

No matter how you’re travelling, we are working hard to keep highways updated and upgraded so that everyone can get where they’re going safely. Highways across the province were damaged in the atmospheric river in 2021, including the Coquihalla, Hwy 1 through the Fraser Canyon, Hwy 8 in the Nicola Valley, and highways in the Fraser Valley. Repairs took place in multiple locations in record time to make sure people and goods could get back on the road. Permanent repairs to our highway system are on their way to completion and always with safety for people, animals, and the environment at top of mind.

DriveBC will be able to tell you if repairs are currently taking place on your route. If you find yourself traveling through a construction zone, please be mindful of the speed limits and the safety of people who are working hard to maintain our roads.

Things can change quickly in B.C., like the direction and severity of wildfires, flooding, or avalanches. Unexpected delays can also happen, and it’s important to make sure you have adequate food, water, and blankets in your vehicle, for both you and your pets. Plan to have appropriate footwear and outerwear for your destination and for stops along the way.

Whether you are hitting the road this summer, or staying close to home, I hope that all British Columbians have a joyful, fun, and safe summer ahead.
