YOUR PERSPECTIVE: Government action needed at Lonzo Park

Jun 7, 2023 | 8:00 AM

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community. Unfortunately, for so many British Columbians right now, that is not the reality. We have watched over the last few years as a growing mental health and addictions crisis has gone largely unaddressed in our province, crime has worsened on our streets, and housing has become so unaffordable that an increasing number of people simply cannot afford a safe place to live.

The intersection of these serious issues can be clearly seen in the rise of homeless encampments in communities across our province. From the Downtown Eastside to Williams Lake, to right here in the Fraser Valley in places like Lonzo Park, this seeming explosion of homeless encampments is a clear symptom of government’s failure to address systemic challenges.

Recently, our BC United Caucus obtained documents that show Premier David Eby was formally warned about the serious health and safety concerns at Abbotsford’s Lonzo Park and Ride lot encampment years ago. However, it’s clear that rather than acting on this information, Eby ignored and buried the briefing note while he was Minister Responsible for Housing.

The documents outline the risks posed by the Lonzo Road Park homeless encampment, including explosions that have led to highway closures, burned-out vehicles, criminal activity including a homicide, and more than 100 people living at the site in unsafe conditions.

Despite calls for action from our BC United MLAs and local government, Premier Eby — with full knowledge of the risks and dangers faced by both the vulnerable individuals living in the camp and the surrounding community — has refused to step in and clear the encampment. Government has a duty to keep people safe, but the NDP is failing in its responsibility to help those who need it the most.

This is an NDP government that has promised for years to build the housing people need. To provide them with good, safe homes. But instead, of fulfilling their promises, government has stood by as the situation has worsened, and more people have been left without the housing they need and deserve.

The NDP should be clearing the Lonzo encampment and securing alternative shelter for the vulnerable people living there, but this government has proven time and time again that it cannot be trusted to take the action required to look after our communities — particularly when it comes to housing.

The Lonzo Park documents are the latest piece of evidence in a pattern of David Eby burying critical reports to suit his political agenda. Just like he tried to cover up the BC Housing scandal, he has also ignored warning signs about this encampment and failed to listen to community members. Without Premier Eby stepping up, it’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt again.

It’s clear that immediate action is needed to address the health and safety concerns at the site, enhance transparency, and give serious consideration to warnings from stakeholders.

The future of our communities depends on David Eby and his NDP government finally engaging with the reality on the ground and acknowledging the daily experiences of British Columbians.
