ABBOTSFORD – Police in Abbotsford say a 22-year-old man who aggressively approached a police vehicle while speeding in a construction zone on Hwy. 1 this past week was found to be an unlicensed driver who had a prior driving ban.

In a statement, Abbotsford Police say one of its patrol officers was conducting patrols on eastbound Hwy. 1 near Clearbrook Road last Tuesday morning just before noon when he observed an aggressive driver come up to his vehicle from behind.

Police say the driver then moved into the slow lane to overtake the police vehicle, which was travelling in the fast lane, and continued speeding ahead. The officer confirmed the vehicle was travelling 105 km/h in a posted 80 km/h construction zone and initiated a traffic stop.

During the investigation, the driver, a 22-year-old man, was found to be unlicensed. Police also found that a driving prohibition notice was outstanding and had not yet been served to him. As a result, the driver was issued the prohibition notice, prohibiting him from driving in BC. His vehicle was subsequently impounded.

“While the impound may have disrupted a number of deliveries scheduled for that day, the consequences of unsafe driving are far more significant,” AbbyPD said. “Construction zone speed limits are in place to protect both workers and motorists, and compliance is not optional. Road safety remains a shared responsibility. AbbyPD officers are on our roadways every day conducting enforcement and holding drivers accountable for decisions that put others at risk. A few extra minutes behind the wheel is never worth jeopardizing the safety of those working to keep our roads and infrastructure moving.”
