MERRITT – There’s been an outpouring of financial support for the family of a man who tragically died in last weekend’s fatal wrong-way crash on the Coquihalla Highway near Merritt.

According to the text of a GoFundMe, Jaskeerat Singh lost his life in a motor vehicle incident on Saturday, October 17 near Merritt.

BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Michael McLaughlin says police were called to Hwy. 5 Saturday morning, Oct. 17 after getting multiple complaints about a vehicle driving southbound in the northbound lanes. While en route to intercept the vehicle, police learned of a head-on collision just south of the Helmer exit near Merritt. When BC Highway Patrol officers got to the scene, they found a black Toyota Tacoma and a white Toyota Rav 4 that were both heavily damaged.

One passenger in a Toyota Rav 4, Singh, died at the scene. Three other Surrey men between the ages of 24 and 38 were in the white Toyota, and all three were taken to hospital with serious injuries, Sgt. McLaughlin said. The lone occupant of the black Toyota Tacoma, a 22-year-old Coldwater man, was detained for suspected impaired driving.

The GoFundMe from organizer Manveer Sahi states that Singh’s sudden passing has left his family, friends, and everyone who knew him heartbroken.

“Losing someone so young and full of life is a pain that words cannot describe,” Sahi wrote. “His life was taken far too soon, leaving behind loved ones who are struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss. As our family navigates this difficult time, we are asking for the support of our community, friends, and kind-hearted individuals to help us through the challenges ahead. The funds raised will go toward funeral and memorial expenses, related costs, and providing financial support to our family during this incredibly difficult period. No family is ever prepared to lose a loved one so suddenly. While no amount of money can bring Jaskeerat back or ease the pain of losing him, every donation will help relieve some of the financial burden and allow our family to focus on grieving, remembering, and honouring his life. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your kindness, generosity, prayers, and support during this heartbreaking time. Forever loved, forever missed, and never forgotten. In loving memory of Jaskeerat Singh.”

As of Thursday morning, nearly $30,000 had been raised from 385 donations in the GoFundMe appeal.
