Costed B.C. Conservative platform promises $2.6 B in growth, $10.8B deficit
The British Columbia Conservatives say their election platform amounts to restraint, not austerity, and will create $2.6 billion in new revenue over three years, while shrinking the deficit to $10.8 billion by 2030.
The document released Sunday, with related costs, says that if Gross Domestic Product grows by 2.5 per cent in 2027, 2.8 per cent in 2028, and 3.2 per cent in 2029, the province will collect an additional $2.62 billion, compared with the NDP’s own forecast.
But the figures assume that provincial growth would exceed national growth rates. The July forecast from the Bank of Canada projects GDP growth in 2027 to reach 1.4 per cent and 1.8 per cent by 2028.
The latest report from the International Monetary Fund also says that advanced economies would grow by 1.9 per cent next year, while overall growth rates for 2027 would be three per cent. That overall figure includes growth rates for economies like China’s and India’s.
