YOUR PERSPECTIVE: Supporting our favourite local events

Feb 23, 2023 | 8:00 AM

Whether it is spring, summer, winter or fall in British Columbia you can always find a fair, festival, or community event to attend. These events are always buzzing with energy and full of smiling faces. If you are in your home community or visiting another town in our beautiful province, these gatherings are often the highlight of a week, trip, or season.

While we have seen a return to in-person activities, the tourism, arts and culture sectors are still struggling in wake of the pandemic. In particular, activities that are dependent upon live audiences are facing ongoing challenges. Our government has supported these important sectors since March of 2020 with over half a billion dollars in funding, but we recognize that help is still needed.

That’s why our government is relaunching our Fairs, Festivals, and Events fund, with up to $30 million in one-time grants for eligible events. Not only will this help your favourite events continue to recover but it will also help create jobs and support the local economy.

I know this fund has been so helpful in the last few years; in 2021 it supported 682 different fairs, festivals and events in 134 communities across the province. A few of the events in my area that have benefitted from this funding include the Maple Ridge Music Talks Festival and the Fraser Valley Children’s festival in Mission.

One of my favourite events in my constituency, the Mission Folk Music Festival, also received a grant through this fund to help put on its 35th annual weekend this past summer. After two years of pivoting and adapting to changes like social distancing, mask policies and having to host the event online, it felt so amazing to be together again in person. This is just one example of the power of these events in bringing people together in our communities across the province.

In my role as Parliamentary Secretary, I have seen first-hand the incredible resilience of the people who organize these events. I’m so grateful that our government continues to understand how important it is to support their hard work and the community events that celebrate music, art, theatre, dance, agriculture, community spirit and more.

This final intake of the British Columbia Fairs, Festivals and Events Recovery Fund will be open until March 3rd for events that take place between April 1, 2023 and December 31, 2024. If you have any questions about how to apply, please contact my office.

Whatever your plans are in the coming year, I hope you get a chance to take in a local fair, festival or event with your family and friends. I know I plan to, and I hope to see you there!
