Update: Surrey Police appeal for dashcam footage after semi-truck struck 3+ cars, jack-knifed

UPDATE #5, 8:35 A.M. SATURDAY: Surrey Police Service spokesperson S/Sgt. Lindsey Houghton says police are appealing to the public for any dashcam footage leading up to yesterday’s multi-vehicle crash in which a semi-truck and trailer struck three sedans and later jack-knifed.

S/Sgt. Houghton says the truck was travelling northbound in the 12200-block Highway 99 when it struck three sedans also travelling northbound. The semi-truck left the northbound lanes, jack-knifed, and struck the median separating northbound from southbound traffic.

S/Sgt. Houghton says the semi-truck then went into southbound traffic, striking a southbound transit bus carrying approximately 50-60 passengers and another sedan.

SPS officers from across Surrey responded as did multiple Surrey Fire Services firefighters. Numerous BCEHS resources responded, including one air ambulance. Due to the size of the collision scene and resulting traffic congestion, Delta Police Department officers, City of Surrey, Mainroad traffic, and Ministry of Transportation and Transit staff also assisted for several hours.

BCEHS paramedics provided emergency medical care to 13 people. Two people were transported to hospital in serious but stable condition, including one by air ambulance who has since been discharged from hospital. Eleven other people were transported by BCEHS to hospital in stable condition with less serious injuries.

SPS’s Collision Investigation Unit attended the collision and is leading the investigation. At this early stage the cause of the collision remains under investigation. SPS is aware that several motorists and/or passengers in vehicles have shared dashcam footage with local media or posted the footage onto social media and are asking everyone who may have dashcam footage to please share it with Surrey Police Service so it can become part of the investigation.

UPDATE #4, 10 P.M.: Surrey Police Spokesperson Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton says Highway 99 has now reopened following the multi-vehicle collision.

S/Sgt. Houghton says the investigation and cause of the collision is in the preliminary stages. However, it appears that the collision occurred after the semi-truck and trailer crossed into the southbound lanes.

UPDATE #3, 8:40 P.M.: In a statement provided to Fraser Valley Today via email, BC Emergency Health Services says it received a call at 4:28 p.m. about a motor vehicle incident in the 12200 block of Hwy. 99 near the interchange with Hwy. 91 in Surrey.

BC EHS says multiple resources responded, including several ambulances with primary care and advanced care paramedics, paramedic response units, a supervisor, and an air ambulance with critical care paramedics.

Paramedics provided emergency medical care to a total of 13 patients, BC EHS said.

Two patients were transported to hospital in serious but stable condition, including one by air ambulance, BC EHS said.

Eleven other patients were transported to hospital in stable condition.

UPDATE #2, 7:45 P.M.: Surrey Police spokesperson S/Sgt. Lindsey Houghton says police and traffic control are working to clear the significant backup of vehicles along the highways near today’s crash.

He says SPS is working with Surrey Fire Services, BCEHS, Delta PD, and the City of Surrey to manage traffic and clear it safely.

Tow trucks are working their way to the vehicles that are not considered drivable. The road is expected to be closed for a few hours.

UPDATE, 6:40 P.M.: Surrey Police Service has released a statement saying both northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 99, just east of the Hwy. 99/91 interchange, are currently closed due to a multi-vehicle collision involving a semi-truck, a trailer, a bus and several vehicles.

Police in Surrey say it is not known whether there are any serious injuries.

Surrey firefighters and BC EHS paramedics are on scene.

Police say it is likely that the highway will be closed for several hours as authorities investigate the incident, collect evidence and clean up the scene.

Original story:

SURREY – A multi-vehicle accident has closed southbound Highway 99 near Delta Friday afternoon.

DriveBC reported at 4:38 p.m. Friday (oct. 16) that Hwy. 99 south of Highway 91 had left lanes in both directions blocked. It later revised the traffic advisory to say Hwy. 99 was closed southbound.

The Pulse Point indicates the accident happened at 4:25 p.m.

Harry Jung told Fraser Valley Today via Facebook Messenger Friday evening he was biking along the Mud Bay Trail when he witnessed the aftermath of the accident. He estimated there were possibly four vehicles involved, including a tractor-trailer, a bus, and a red Tesla involved.

The tractor-trailer involved appears jack-knifed across one direction of the highway. Jung said fluid on the highway came from the tractor-trailer.

DriveBC says motorists should expect delays due to major congestion, and there is presently no estimated time of reopening for southbound Hwy. 99.
