CHILLIWACK – Area drivers, cyclists and pedestrians could see upgrades to Young Road between Airport Road and Luckakuck Way if the City of Chilliwack moves forward with anticipated improvements to an 800-metre section of the road corridor.

According to its website, the City of Chilliwack recently posted an expression of interest from qualified proponents to provide new engineering design and pre-design solutions toward improved vehicular movements and increased pedestrian and cyclist facilities on Young Road.

The city said a pre-selection process would be used to identify three qualified proponents to submit comprehensive proposals for the project.

The text of a bid/tender that closed on October 1, 2026, reveals that the City of Chilliwack hopes to construct approximately 800 metres of road widening on Young Road from Airport Road to Luckakuck Way, and make public works enhancements with curbs, sidewalks, and multi-use pathways, among other things.

On its website, the city says it will issue an RFP (request for proposal) to selected proponents on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. Acceptance of the RFP is tentatively scheduled for November 17, and the city hopes to achieve substantial completion of the project by March 15, 2027.

The successful proponent will build on preliminary designs previously prepared by ISL Engineering (2022) and McElhanney (2018).

In addition to geotechnical investigations and topographic surveys, the successful project team will be responsible for coordinating utility relocations with BC Hydro, Telus and Shaw; confirm additional necessary road allowance to be purchased; optimizing road alignment to comply with federal airport runway clearance requirements of the existing runway and planned future extension of the runway at the nearby Chilliwack Airport. Coordination with the city’s airport runway extension design engineering consultant would also be required.

The successful proponent will also be tasked with exploring ornamental streetlight design along the entire corridor and a new traffic signal at Young Road/Olds Drive.

The City of Chilliwack says it will provide additional details at the RFP (request for proposal) stage to elaborate on the project scope as well as identify design criteria.
