Chilliwack City Council to vote on $7.2M contract to revitalize downtown, replace aging infrastructure

According to a city staff report, Main Street has been under consideration for extensive capital works improvements to replace aging utility infrastructure, and to revitalize the street to conform to the new downtown standards like other capital projects in the downtown core.

The Main Street surface works will be constructed in two phases. This current Phase I is expected to build approximately one half of the surface works from Patten Avenue to Kipp Avenue. Phase II will complete the project all the way to Wellington Avenue. The full extent of the underground utility works will be completed in this first phase. Construction will begin in October 2026 and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2027.

The staff report indicates the sanitary, storm and water infrastructure along the Main Street corridor are at the end of their service life and need to be replaced. This work will include new sanitary and storm mains, as well as a new ductile iron water main. The water main replacement will extend from Alexander Avenue to Wellington Avenue, the new storm infrastructure will be from Cheam Avenue to Wellington Avenue, and sanitary infrastructure will be replaced between Yale Road and Princess Avenue.

Boulevards will be red-stamped concrete with tree grates as well as landscaping and planters at the intersection curb bulges, as seen along Mill Street and Yale Road. In doing so, this will allow for increased drainage improvements and an enhanced pedestrian experience.

The city plans to replace the traffic signal at Main Street and Spadina Avenue to bring it into compliance with current electrical and traffic standards and to enable capacity for future upgrades.
