Officials mark completed AbbyPD headquarters expansion with ribbon-cutting ceremony

ABBOTSFORD — Officials have recently celebrated new upgrades to the Abbotsford Police Department’s headquarters nearly 40 years after the original building opened its doors.

On Wednesday, September 2, the City of Abbotsford joined AbbyPD for the ceremonial opening and flag-raising of the completed project, which included a four-storey expansion and renovations to the existing headquarters.

“As Abbotsford continues to grow, so does the need for modern public safety infrastructure,” said Abbotsford Mayor and Police Board Chair Ross Siemens.

“This investment reflects our commitment to keeping our community safe by providing the Abbotsford Police Department with the facilities and resources needed to deliver exceptional service to residents now and in the years ahead.”

The headquarters were originally built in 1988 for 74 officers and staff to serve roughly 58,000 residents. Now, the City says AbbyPD has nearly 350 officers and staff serving more than 175,000 residents.

“This building was designed to meet the needs of a growing city, support our employees in delivering exceptional service, and strengthen our connection with the public,” said Chief Constable Colin Watson. “We are excited to welcome residents into this modern space and look forward to serving Abbotsford for many years to come.”

The $83.65 million project kicked off in September 2022, with the expansion completed in April last year.

The Public Service Counter is back at headquarters after being temporarily relocated to the Community Policing Office on Marshall Road while work was underway.
