Maple Ridge police ramping up presence for back-to-school season

MAPLE RIDGE — RCMP in Maple Ridge are looking to keep local roadways safe for students as they start making their way back to classrooms.

“Operation Safe Start”, a two-week enforcement and education blitz, is set to kick off Tuesday (Sep. 8) to ensure every elementary school in the city has a police presence at peak times.

Officers will be watching for compliance with speed limits, phone use and stopping for school buses and pedestrians at crosswalks.

 Police are also reminding residents that e-scooters are not allowed on local roads or sidewalks.

Other tips include slowing down to 30 km/h in school and playground zones, using designated drop-off and pick-up areas, and encouraging kids to stay on sidewalks and to look both ways before crossing.

“We want to ensure as smooth a transition as possible for all road users especially students, parents, and school staff,” said Maple Ridge RCMP Family and Youth Resource Team (FYRST) Constable Sirak Gebresellasie. 

“It is an exciting and busy time of year and taking the time to go over some simple road safety reminders with your family will make it a more positive experience for everyone.”
