ABBOTSFORD — A 47-year-old man with an apparent rap sheet faces a litany of charges in connection with a dangerous police chase in which he evaded authorities for over an hour in the Fraser Valley in the fall of 2021.

On October 12, 2021, Abbotsford Police patrol officers received a report of an erratic driver eastbound on Highway 1 entering the Abbotsford area. Officers quickly located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop resulting in the driver failing to stop for police, according to Sgt. Paul Walker of the Abby PD.

The Lower Mainland Police Helicopter Air 1 continued to follow the vehicle while ground units broke off. During the next 90 minutes, the vehicle was observed running numerous stop signs, passing cars unsafely and, forcing oncoming vehicle traffic onto the shoulder of the road, while driving at excessive speeds, Sgt. Walker said.

When the vehicle stopped in the Chilliwack area, AbbyPD officers, with the assistance of the Lower Mainland Police Dog Service and the Chilliwack RCMP, took 47-year-old Jason Himpfen into custody. During the search, officers located approximately 370 grams of combined fentanyl and Methamphetamine. This seizure equaled approximately 800 individual doses, Sgt. Walker said.

On Tuesday, February 7, 2023, more than 15 months after the incident, the B.C. Prosecution Service approved charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, flight from police, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

“This offender, who refused to stop for police, exhibited careless disregard for the citizens of Abbotsford and Chilliwack. We are fortunate to have had the assistance of Air 1, which captured the scope of the dangerous driving in question. The sizeable quantity of drugs seized by AbbyPD officers would have otherwise hit our streets and imperiled even more lives than the ones he imperiled through his reckless driving behaviour,” said Inspector Kevin Murray.

Himpfen appears to be linked to Lower Mainland gang activity and fits the description of a prolific offender.

An Abby PD news bulletin from July 2021 states Himpfen posed a significant risk to the safety of the community and anyone who may be associated with him. According to the Abby PD news bulletin, Himpfen has been involved in the Lower Mainland gang conflict.
