Fire crews battle refuse-pile blaze at Hope area transfer station

HOPE — The Hope Fire Department says its crews were initially called out to a small garbage fire early Friday (August 28) morning however by the time they arrived, they found a fully involved garbage pile burning at the Valley Waste Transfer Station on Ross Road.

The department says five Hope firefighters and three apparatus responded, with mutual aid from Yale Fire, which sent six members and two apparatus. Hope Fire says the support was a major help during an unusually busy stretch that has included eight fires in seven days.

Crews worked through the refuse pile to fully extinguish the fire. The department says two water tenders shuttled more than 8,000 gallons of water to support the operation, and an excavator was used to speed suppression efforts.
