ABBOTSFORD – B.C.’s civilian watchdog is probing an incident in which a man forcibly entered a home, armed himself with a weapon, and later suffered a serious injury during an interaction with Abbotsford Police Department officers last week.

In a statement, the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) says it’s investigating an arrest that occurred in Abbotsford on Wednesday, August 12.

According to information provided by AbbyPD, officers responded to a home on Mouat Drive at approximately 10:30 p.m. for a report from a woman that a family member had forcibly entered her residence on Mouat Drive, armed himself with a weapon, and was threatening the occupants of the home.

On arrival, the first officer located the man on an upper balcony of the residence. During the arrest and ensuing interaction, the man sustained a serious but non-life-threatening injury. Additional officers attended, and the man was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for medical assessment.

The IIO was notified of the incident and is now investigating.

The IIO will see if there has been injury that meets the threshold of serious harm as defined by the Police Act, and whether there’s a connection between the serious harm and police action or inaction.

If both conditions are met, IIO personnel will examine all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.

The IIO is an independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It conducts investigations into all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
